How to help a teen with ADHD focus on homework

Homework goes better when the setup does some of the work. These are study habits, drawn from public guidance for parents. They are not medical advice, and they don't replace a plan from your teen's doctor or school.

Pick one time and one place

Same time each day, same spot. CHADD suggests a designated homework time and a space where your teen can be near you or another adult, with as few distractions as possible. A kitchen table counts.

Clear the distractions before they start

The CDC's tips for parents say to turn off the TV and social media, limit noise and give a clean workspace. The same page notes that some kids work better moving around or with background music, so watch what works for yours instead of assuming.

Make the first step small

"Do your history project" is too big to start. Break it into short steps and work on one section at a time. For long assignments, use a calendar to plan the pieces, as CHADD suggests, and start early.

Use a timer for work and for breaks

A timer shows where work time ends and break time begins. CHADD suggests 5–10 minute breaks to move around and grab a snack, and working out with your teen how often they need one.

Start with something easier

Understood.org suggests a real break between school and homework, then starting with an easier assignment so the evening doesn't open with the hardest, most frustrating thing.

Notice effort, out loud

The CDC recommends realistic goals and praise or other rewards for effort. Small steps count. If homework keeps being a fight, talk to your teen's teachers; if your teen has an IEP or 504 plan, Understood.org suggests asking about homework accommodations.
